CityCenterDC Surprise Proposal | Aneela & Michael

Some love stories take time—and for Aneela and Michael, this CityCenterDC surprise proposal was eight years in the making.

Michael and I stood tucked away in the heart of CityCenterDC in Washington DC, trying to look casual while doing the opposite. The ring box was practically jumping out of his pocket, and he kept glancing around at the glowing LED panels above us, equal parts awe and nerves.

Just a few storefronts away, Aneela was shopping with her mom and sisters, completely unaware of what was about to happen.

THE PROPOSAL MOMENT

As Aneela made her way down the main walkway at CityCenterDC, Michael took a breath, stepped around the corner, and called her name.

Confusion turned into realization in a split second.

Then came:
“OMG… are you freaking kidding me?!”

And just like that, he was down on one knee.

Tears. Laughter. Shock. Eight years of history all crashing into one moment.

She said yes—through happy tears and disbelief—and immediately wrapped him in the kind of hug that says everything words can’t.

WHY CITYCENTERDC IS PERFECT FOR A SURPRISE PROPOSAL

Urban Elegance with Built-In Atmosphere

A CityCenterDC surprise proposal hits different.

Between the modern architecture, reflective glass, and the iconic overhead light installations, the entire space feels cinematic without trying too hard. It’s one of the few places in DC where you get both:

  • clean, upscale city energy

  • and a naturally romantic setting

TIMING THE PROPOSAL

We planned this for later in the day, when the lights begin to glow and the crowd softens just enough.

That timing gave us:

  • privacy without isolation

  • movement without chaos

  • and lighting that feels alive

Perfect for keeping the surprise intact while still capturing everything.

FAMILY REACTIONS + CELEBRATION

After the proposal, Aneela’s mom and sisters came in—smiles, tears, hugs, all of it.

We moved over to the decorative balloon installation in CityCenterDC and captured family portraits that felt just as meaningful as the proposal itself.

Because this wasn’t just a proposal.

It was a moment shared with the people who’ve been there the whole way.

A PERSONAL NOTE

I’ve known Aneela and Michael since we were kids—playing rugby, running around at summer camps, growing up in the same circles.

So this wasn’t just documenting a proposal.

It was watching two people I’ve known for years step into the next chapter of their lives.

And that always hits different.
