If you’re deep in wedding planning and exploring videographer packages, you might be wondering: Can you get raw video footage of a wedding? It’s a question I get asked often at Ethan Film and Photo, and the short answer is—yes and no.

Let’s dive into what raw footage really means, why many videographers don’t offer it (or charge extra for it), and why I take a different approach that gives you the full story of your day—without handing you hours of unedited, shaky, colorless clips.

What Is Raw Wedding Video Footage, Really?

Raw footage is the unprocessed video straight from the camera. It hasn’t been color corrected, edited, synced with professional audio, or even trimmed down. It often includes:

  • Shaky shots from when the camera is repositioning

  • Over- or under-exposed clips

  • Scratchy or low-quality in-camera audio

  • Long periods of silence or random scenery

While it might sound nice to receive everything captured on your wedding day, watching raw footage is often more frustrating than helpful. Many clips are only a few seconds long and were never intended to be viewed as standalone moments. This is why many videographers don’t include it—or charge extra if you request it.

Why Most Videographers Don’t Include Raw Footage

  • Lack of polish: Raw footage often looks flat and lifeless. I shoot in a profile called C-Log, which is designed for maximum flexibility in post-production, but not very flattering straight out of the camera.

  • Incomprehensible storylines: The raw video is unordered and fragmented. There’s no narrative flow.

  • Audio challenges: In-camera audio is often poor. The clear sound you hear in edited videos comes from professional external recorders that are synced and mixed after the fact.

  • Massive file sizes: Raw footage from a full wedding day—especially in 4K—can run into hundreds of gigabytes. This makes it hard to deliver and even harder to view.

  • Copyright concerns: Raw footage can be re-edited or misused in ways that don’t represent the filmmaker’s artistic vision, and that can impact reputation.

So, What Do I Offer Instead? A Full-Day Movie
At Ethan Film and Photo, I’ve developed something better. Instead of raw files, I provide a Full-Day Movie as part of every wedding video package.

Think of it as your entire wedding day, laid out and edited into individual chapters:

  • Getting Ready

  • First Look

  • Ceremony

  • Speeches & Toasts

  • Reception Events

  • Dancing and Send-Off

Each section is edited with clean audio, smooth transitions, and full color correction—giving you a complete, watchable version of the day from start to finish. While these Full-Day Movies are not included in my public portfolio due to their length (typically 2–4 hours), they’re a core part of what couples receive in every package.

Why Couples Love the Full-Day Movie

You won’t have to sort through hours of disorganized clips. You’ll have a structured, cinematic way to relive your day as it actually happened. From the vows to the wild dance moves, you’ll have it all—edited, cleaned up, and easy to share with family and friends.

If you’re planning a longer celebration, like a Virginia wedding weekend, or an intimate elopement, having this complete coverage is priceless. You’ll catch moments you missed, hear the laughter, the music, and the stories, and relive the day from beginning to end.

Final Thoughts: The Raw Footage Question, Answered

So, can you get raw video footage of a wedding? Technically yes, but in most cases—it’s not what you really want. That’s why I offer something better. My Full-Day Movie gives you the best of both worlds: all-day coverage, without the stress of sifting through unedited files.
