Shenandoah Waterfall Engagement Photos | Ryan & Liz at South River Falls

Ryan and Liz wanted something adventurous for their engagement photos in Shenandoah National Park, so we hiked down to South River Falls for a set of waterfall engagement photos that felt wild, cinematic, and completely theirs. Cold water, mist in the air, and a massive cascade behind them turned a simple engagement shoot into something unforgettable.

Meet Your Shenandoah Engagement Photographer

Hey, I’m Ethan. I’m a wedding and engagement photographer based near Shenandoah National Park, and I’ve photographed more than 100 weddings and countless mountain sessions across Virginia. My goal is simple: create bold images for bold people, filled with warmth, joy, and real storytelling so couples can feel confident, free, and completely themselves in front of the camera.

A Waterfall Engagement Session at South River Falls

After sunrise photos at Little Stony Man, Liz told me she wanted something dramatic. South River Falls is one of the biggest waterfalls in Shenandoah, and at the bottom there’s a small basin where couples can wade in the water and move naturally.

It’s a longer hike than most Shenandoah waterfalls, which is exactly why it works. Fewer crowds, better light, and space to relax. Ryan and Liz kicked off their shoes, danced in the water, and forgot about the camera.

That’s when the real photos happen.

Why South River Falls Is Perfect for Engagement Photos

South River Falls sits about ten minutes north of Swift Run Gap off Skyline Drive. The trail drops steadily through forest before opening to an 80-foot waterfall surrounded by rock ledges and soft green moss.

It gives you:

• Huge natural backdrop
• Space to move
• Water reflections
• Quiet moments without crowds

If you’re looking for engagement photos that feel adventurous without hiking all day, this is one of the best spots in Shenandoah.

That’s when the real photos happen.

A Personal Session With Close Friends

Ryan has been one of my best friends for years, so this session meant a lot to me. Liz wanted photos that felt cinematic and different from everything she’d seen online, and Shenandoah gave us exactly that. We started the morning at Little Stony Man, hiking through thick fog that swallowed the mountain views and wrapped everything in soft light. By the time we reached South River Falls for the second half of their engagement shoot, that same hazy atmosphere had drifted down into the valley, pairing the misty mountaintop session with a moody waterfall backdrop that felt like two chapters of the same story.

Fog rolled in. The water was freezing. Ryan finally smiled. And somehow it all came together into images that feel like a scene from a movie.

Those are the sessions I love most.
