Carla and Cathy didn’t.
They wanted something that felt real. Comfortable. Honest. And if we’re being honest, Carla came into this session a little nervous about being in front of the camera at all.
By the end of it, that hesitation was gone.
A Changing Landscape at the Kennedy Center
We started along one of the most recognizable stretches of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where rows of willow trees once framed the walkway along the Potomac.
That space has since been removed, which makes these images feel a little more like a time capsule now.
From there, we moved into the newer Reach expansion, where the architecture shifts completely. Clean lines. Open space. Concrete, symmetry, and light doing most of the heavy lifting.
It’s one of the most underrated spots for Kennedy Center engagement photos in DC, especially if you’re drawn to something modern and a little less expected.
Letting Go of “Perfect” Photos
Carla told me before we started that she was nervous.
Not about the location. Not about the timing.
About herself.

As the sun started to drop, we moved up to the terrace.
This is where the Kennedy Center really opens up. You get the skyline of Arlington and Rosslyn stretching across the horizon, layered behind that bold checkered flooring and industrial concrete textures.
It’s a contrast that works incredibly well in photos. Soft connection between two people set against strong, structured lines.
We leaned into that.
No complicated setups. Just positioning, light, and letting the moment breathe.
The sky gave us deep color that night, which added another layer of depth without needing to force anything.
Lower Level at The Reach
We wrapped the session down at the lower level near The Reach buildings.
This area feels completely different. More intimate. More grounded. The architecture surrounds you instead of opening outward.
It’s perfect for slowing things down.

From Engagement to Elopement to Wedding Day
This session was just the beginning of Carla and Cathy’s story.
Not long after these Kennedy Center engagement photos, they chose to have a quiet, intimate elopement along the Potomac River in Alexandria, surrounded by a small group of their closest people. It was simple, emotional, and deeply personal in a completely different way.
Later, they celebrated with a full wedding day in Washington, DC, bringing together their community for a ceremony, portraits, and a reception that felt just as intentional as every step leading up to it.
